Calm Your Stresses

Post a new topicby southerngal on Mon Oct 29, 2007 8:53 pm

Here are some great ways to de-stress your life:

-Turn off your cell phone. When you’re constantly connected, work worries spill into your home life and family worries make you frantic on the job, a University of Wisconsin study found. Tell friends and coworkers to contact you via e-mail instead-it doesn’t seem to trigger the same stress response.

-Have dessert. Yay! Eating something sweet may decrease the production of a stress hormone called glucocorticoid, suggests a University of Cincinnati study. Don’t try to save calories with artificial sweeteners: Foods made with them didn’t deliver the same response as fare made with real sugar. A few bites should do the trick (scarfing the entire Godiva sampler is, alas, not called for).

-Finish your unfinished business. Tying up annoying loose ends-an unpaid bill, those unreturned phone calls-can cut stress levels. Worrying about nagging tasks causes your body to constantly produce stress hormones, which wears you out over time. Research has actually shown that all of those little things that pile up and become a chronic bother can be just as damaging in the long run as a major trauma, such as losing your job or getting divorced.

-Pop an Altoid. Research from Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia found that smelling peppermint or cinnamon decreased people’s frustration with what can be one of life’s most stressful moments-being stuck in traffic. While researchers looked only at the scent’s impact on road rage, they say chewing a piece of strong-flavored gum or a mint may help you keep your cool at other crazed times, too.

There's a site that I recently discovered that calms me whenever i'm stressed out. It's called My Inner World (www.myinnerworld.com) -They provide free soothing music and a place to create your own meditation room. The site also has a strong women's community with many women seeking support and empowerment from other women. You can also do all sorts of fun stuff like find out your Color of the Day, Energy of the Day, weekly and monthly forecasts, compatibility tests, and more. It's such a great site for women.
